The Isabella Brahma is a rare and striking colour variety of the large, gentle giant Brahma chicken. They are famous for their unique pastel plumage, which blends soft cream, gold, and lavender, as well as their signature heavily feathered legs, calm temperament, and winter hardiness.
- Appearance: The “Isabella” or “Isabel” colour is the result of the lavender gene diluting a standard partridge pattern. This gives them a beautiful, iridescent mix of pale gold and silvery-grey.
- Size: They are exceptionally large, stately birds. Roosters can easily weigh up to 12 lbs, while hens typically weigh around 9.5 lbs.
- Temperament: Known as “gentle giants,” they are incredibly docile, friendly, and easy to handle, making them fantastic pets and great for families or beginners.
- Rarity: Because the lavender colour is recessive, breeding for the exact Isabella pencilling pattern takes a fair bit of work, making them a highly sought-after collector’s bird.
- Annual Output: Average of 150–200 eggs annually (roughly 3 to 4 eggs per week).
- Egg Size and Colour: Medium to large eggs with a brown, tan, or sometimes light pinkish tint.
- Starting Age: Pullets typically begin laying around 6 to 7 months of age, though they mature slowly overall.
- Winter Laying: Unlike many breeds that slow down when daylight drops, Brahmas are renowned as superior winter layers, maintaining steady production through the colder months from October to March/May.
- Broodiness & Mothering: They can go broody and make exceptionally calm, attentive mothers due to their large and gentle size
Aug 2026 Our first fertility test for this breed showed a rate of 95% fertility

Hatching Eggs: Chicken - Isabella Brahma

Eggs arrived extremely well wrapped and boxed.
Fragile on box for courier.
Unfortunately the eggs were not fertile.
I had them in a Brinsea mini 2 and unfortunately the eggs lit up like a light bulb.
I will try again in October, maybe it was just a bad batch .
Thank you Paul for your review of your purchase of the 2 eggs. Oh my – that’s odd as we’ve just finished incubating every egg laid for a 3 week period and every single egg was fertile, many have since hatched and some still developing. I’ll contact you Paul for replacements.
