The Legbar is a rare breed auto-sexing breed of chicken, created in the early twentieth century. Their main egg colour is blue, green, or olive.
Cream Legbar chicks can be sexed at birth by their down colour. The photograph attached shows the difference between the male (who is lighter in appearance and has a yellow spot on the top of his head) and the female (who has a darker back with darker stripes).
Very occasionally our Cream Legbars throw a white chick. These are known as White Legbars also known as White Sport Cream Legbars and are one of the most highly desired and extremely rare breeds of chicken.
These hardy, active foragers generally start laying at 5–6 months old and are excellent for consistent, year-round egg production.
- Annual Egg Count: 150–200 (average), with some strains reaching 220–280.
- Weekly Output: Approximately 3–4 eggs per week.
- Color: Light blue, green, or olive shades.
- Size: Medium to large.
- Lifespan Performance: High production in the first 2 years, with a typical 20% decline annually thereafter
JULY 2025: Latest fertility rate is 80% (of 100% eggs laid over a consecutive 5 day period)

After a lot of research on where to buy fertile eggs, I am so glad I chose to go with Homefarm Cornwall. This is the first time we have hatched chicks at home. Bought a clutch of 10 mixed hatching eggs, one was unfertilised and lost one to failure to hatch but I had 8 out of 10 hatch !!!
I had one that was cracked and I micropore taped it and that even hatched, Forrest ended up being a special needs chicken but is theiving in his new home.
I ended up with 5 hens and 3 roosters, the hens started to lay at 16/18 weeks old and we even have a leghorn hen that lays double yolkers.
The hens are big girls and sure have an appetite and cheekiness of coming back to there hatching area (living room) to lay there eggs on my couch.

Would I buy again? Certainly but running out of garden for more at the moment.

Update on the hatching rate after my purchase in March.
20 out of 24 egg hatched, very healthy and very chubby chicks.
Taking into account delay by Royal Mail and an airplane journey to Europe the results are astonishing.
