Fresh Cornish-grown Cucamelons / Pepquinos

SKU: 4100 Category:

Description

We grow our Cucamelons in polytunnels on our farm in Looe, Cornwall.

📺 See us them growing on TV 📺 Devon & Cornwall: Series 5 Episode 3.

They are seasonally available from July/Aug through to November (2023 season now ended – be back 2024). They can be stored fresh for about 3-4 weeks in the fridge (if you haven’t snaffled them all by then!) 🙂

They are utterly delicious, we use them as an amazing addition to Gin & Tonic, a Cola with ice or a refreshing Pimms in the summer.  They are very versatile and can be used as a snack served with olives and a dressing to enjoy with friends.  We also pickle them in Gin/Pimms for a bit of a explosion on the palette!

You must try them – taste them and you’ll be hooked!

With their zesty flavour, Cucamelons are also a great additions to salsas, salads and cocktails.

Known in Mexico as Sandiitas de Raton, which literally translates to “Little Mouse Watermelons”, Cucamelons are a cute little fruit with bags of personality. Originating from Mexico, Cucamelons will produce masses of fruit throughout the summer that taste like cucumber and lime.

Naudin. Melothria scabra, also known as the Cucamelon, is a vine grown for its edible fruit. Fruits are about the size of grapes and taste like cucumbers with a tinge of sourness. Vernacular names include mouse melon, Mexican sour gherkin, Cucamelon, Mexican miniature watermelon, Mexican sour cucumber and pepquinos. Cute! 🙂

I’d never heard of these marble-sized crunches of yumminess until last month. So unusual! A crisp bite followed by a juicy, inner part, all neatly packed in a mini-watermelon-type skin. Lovely to look at, great to crunch and a nice twist to those G & Ts. Great discovery!

I love these , they are the most tasty little finger cucamelons I have ever had. Please don’t stop growing them. Delicious 😋

I absolutely love these for packed lunches – a tasty easy to pick at snack that the kids love! (I ‘save’ a few for my GnT! – they don’t notice!)

    What a revelation!
    Cucumelons!
Who knew?! ….. Little morsels of deliciousness. I’ve been raving about them ever since and will be going back for more! Perfect in GnTs and to be honest perfect to pop and chomp whilst doing the cooking too!
